SUNY Plattsburgh Jazz Festival - Birth of the Cool
E. Glenn Giltz Auditorium Hawkins Hall SUNY Plattsburgh, Beekman and Cornelia, Plattsburgh, NY
The BDJF Nonet was formed under the direction of University of Vermont professor Alex Stewart to present the Birth of the Cool music at the 2012 Burlington Discover Jazz Festival in a concert at the Flynn Center that also featured a quartet led by legendary alto saxophonist Lee Konitz (one of the original soloists on the Birth of the Cool album). The rest of the nonet consists of many of the premier jazz musicians in Vermont including a number of UVM faculty members. Trumpeter Ray Vega, pianist Tom Cleary, bassist John Rivers, alto saxophonist Brian McCarthy, and trombonist Rick Davies all teach at UVM as well as tuba player Yutaka Kono who conducts the UVM Symphony Orchestra. Geza Carr on percussion and French horn player Joy Worland round out the BDJF nonet personnel.
